Great show- Lots of Great Moments!
After viewing some of their older shows on YouTube and their live album, I had some concerns about how this show would unfold. I was not really a fan of those moments I'd heard on the album where it seemed that Dombresky was into bringing the energy and sound level down too low as opposed to Derek's old band.
Their portion, maybe 1:45, could have been longer. The song selection, the dynamics, highs, lows.. everything was down this time around. Doyle Bramhall was great and at a perfect length. Sharon Jones and Dap Kings were awesome and enjoyable but maybe a little too long (over 1 hour) after a while. I think she's awesome but didn't really want to wait quite so long and that late for the main event to begin.
There were many song selections from Made Up Mind, which is perhaps their stronger album. Although Derek's beautifully woven solo on Midnight In Harlem (from first album) was a highlight. Additionally, Get What You Deserve from his old band was as hot as ever and Susan getting down both vocally and on guitar on I Pity The Fool was fan-freaking-tabulous! Overall though, Derek's guitar playing is one of the greatest musical and spiritual joys of my life... I will go again next chance I get.
